Thank you for choosing Daea Express Shipping.
Recently, we have frequently encountered cases where passengers purchase tickets for vessels operating between Busan and Tsushima, Japan, for the purpose commonly known as a “VISA RUN”—that is, temporarily leaving a country for a neighboring country shortly before the permitted visa-free or tourist stay expires and then attempting to re-enter in order to extend their period of stay.
We would therefore like to inform you in advance of our company’s policy and several relevant cases. We kindly ask you to take note of the following information and, whenever possible, use air travel for entering and exiting Korea.
First, for reservations made through the Daea Express Shipping website, we obtain confirmation from the Korean Immigration Service regarding whether foreign passengers are eligible to re-enter Korea based on the passport information provided during the reservation process. If we receive a response indicating that re-entry may not be permitted, we will cancel the reservation without prior notice and notify the passenger by text message. Passengers are required to agree to this policy in advance when making a reservation; reservations cannot be completed without such consent.
For reservations made through travel agencies, we also require information regarding foreign passengers in advance and check with the Korean Immigration Service to confirm whether re-entry is permitted before approving the reservation.
Even in cases where this verification process may have been missed, if a passenger is suspected of attempting a “VISA RUN” when their ticket is issued on the day of departure, we will contact the Korean Immigration Service for confirmation on the same day. A boarding ticket will only be issued if there are no issues with the passenger’s re-entry eligibility. We kindly ask for your understanding in this regard.
Below are several examples of cases in which re-entry was not permitted or was considered likely to be refused:
1. North American citizen, Mr./Ms. A - A citizen was permitted to stay in Korea for 90 days as a tourist. However, three to four days before the expiration of the permitted stay, the passenger purchased a same-day round-trip ticket to Tsushima and attempted to extend their stay in Korea. The passenger was not permitted to have the boarding ticket issued on the morning of departure.
2. Latin American citizen, Mr./Ms. B - A citizen had an Alien Registration Card that was due to expire within a few days. After extending their stay in Korea for one month, the passenger purchased a one-night trip to Tsushima four days before the new expiration date and attempted to re-enter Korea. Based on the opinion of the Korean Immigration Service that re-entry could be denied, the reservation was cancelled.
3. Citizen of a Southeast Asian country, Mr./Ms. C - A citizen stated that they intended to remain in Korea with the intention of marrying their Korean boyfriend. On two or three occasions, the passenger purchased either same-day or one-night tickets to Tsushima several days before the expiration of their permitted stay and attempted to extend their stay in Korea through re-entry. On the final attempt, the passenger was not permitted to have the boarding ticket issued on the day of departure.
There have been many other similar cases.
If Korean acquaintances of foreign nationals ask about extending their stay in Korea through a trip to Tsushima or elsewhere, we kindly ask that you advise them to return to their home country and obtain the appropriate visa before returning to Korea.
Finally, we sincerely ask all foreign nationals to obtain the appropriate visa in advance and enjoy their life and stay in the Republic of Korea through legitimate immigration procedures.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
